The reputable Jeux Vidéo Magazine has made an interesting move by sharing some rumors about an upcoming game. Instead of relying on third-party sources, they have conducted their own investigation into the yet-to-be-announced remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, a title that has been leaked multiple times.
The rumored remake, reportedly utilizing the Anvil Pipeline engine, is expected to bring about significant changes. One of the most prominent alterations will be the elimination of all modern-day sequences, meaning characters like Rebecca, Shaun, and others will not make an appearance. The modern-day storyline, which was prominent in earlier games featuring Desmond, has gradually taken a back seat and only appears in text form in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Instead, players can anticipate “a few extra hours of content,” including previously cut segments of Mary Read’s story.
In terms of gameplay, sources suggest that the remake will adopt a more RPG-style approach similar to recent titles, incorporating elements like loot, weapon stats, and a new inventory system. Combat mechanics are also expected to align more closely with the style seen in recent games. While the map size remains the same, players can look forward to more activities to engage in. Additionally, advancements in modern technology will eliminate loading screens when transitioning from ship travel to land exploration.
The report indicates a potential early 2026 release, possibly in March, which deviates slightly from earlier projections. Development is being handled by Ubisoft studios in Singapore, Belgrade, and Bordeaux, with the possibility of reusing assets from Skull & Bones to cut costs.
While not reaching the same level as Resident Evil 2’s remake, expectations are set for a remake that surpasses a mere remaster.
Although Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the Black Flag remake, signs point to an imminent reveal. Back in 2013, we awarded the original release a solid 9/10 score.
“Black Flag not only signifies a return to form for Assassin’s Creed but stands out as one of the series’ best entries,” remarked Gareth. “It refines the gameplay mechanics of its predecessors and pairs them with a vast open world brimming with content that can keep players entertained for days. For those craving a true pirate experience, this game delivers on all fronts.”
