Researchers are now looking for advanced alien civilizations beyond the Milky Way

Why It Matters:

Radio waves from distant galaxies are too faint to provide meaningful data for potential space observations. However, a sufficiently advanced alien civilization could harness energy in such a way that an entire galaxy could be affected. SETI is currently investigating this intriguing possibility.

Using a powerful ground array for low-frequency radio observations, researchers are searching for potential signs of extraterrestrial life outside the Milky Way. Radio astronomer Chenoa Tremblay and astrophysicist Steven Tingay recently published a study on their efforts to detect “technosignatures” from distant parts of the cosmos.

While most projects focus on targets within the Milky Way, SETI is expanding its search to over 1300 “foreign” galaxies. By directing the Murchison Widefield Array towards the Vela supernova remnant, they aim to uncover evidence of advanced civilizations capable of manipulating energy on a grand scale.

The study focuses on civilizations that could harness the energy of entire stars or galaxies, following the Kardashev Scale’s classification. The researchers are particularly interested in Type II and Type III civilizations, which could emit detectable electromagnetic radiation.

Despite the vast distances and time involved in detecting signals from other galaxies, the researchers remain dedicated to exploring the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence. While no definitive findings have been reported yet, the search continues with an open mind.
