After a two-day shutdown due to a security breach, Rainbow Six Siege X is now back online. Players noticed unusual activity on the evening of 26th December, with billions of in-game currency and rare skins appearing in their accounts. Ubisoft has since rolled back all data to correct any discrepancies in in-game credit, or Renown. Players may experience queues to access the game as a result.
A dispute has arisen between hacking groups claiming responsibility for the breach. Some groups allege that they have stolen the source code for all Ubisoft games, although these claims are likely exaggerated. Reports suggest that the security breach may have originated from an employee in an outsourced helpdesk support company in India who was bribed to provide unauthorized access to user accounts and functionalities.
Additionally, there are reports of scammers contacting individuals on Telegram, falsely claiming to have obtained personal data from the Ubisoft breach and demanding money. It appears to be a separate scam not related to the actual breach of the Rainbow Six servers, and Ubisoft has not confirmed any data breaches.
In June of this year, Ubisoft revamped the decade-old tactical shooter, renaming it Rainbow Six Siege X and introducing technical enhancements. The game also transitioned to a free-to-play model. Rainbow Six, along with Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, is now part of a separate Ubisoft company.
