Pimax Announces Dream Air, a Compact VR Headset With One Totally Unique Feature

The Pimax Dream Air: A Compact and Feature-Rich VR Headset

The Pimax Dream Air headset marks a new direction for the company, moving away from its traditionally bulky headsets to create a more compact yet still feature-rich device. One standout feature of the Dream Air is its automatic tightening headstrap, a first in the industry.

Priced at $1,900 and set to ship in May 2025, the Dream Air is positioned to compete with other high-end compact PC VR headsets like Bigscreen Beyond and the Shiftall MaganeX Superlight.

However, Pimax is not shying away from making ambitious promises that may divert attention from delivering on time. The Dream Air comes with an optional compute puck named ‘Cobb’, which allows the headset to transform into a standalone VR device. The puck will feature a Snapdragon XR2 chip and battery, along with an optional SteamVR Tracking faceplate.

Continuing its trend of announcing new products before fulfilling previous commitments, Pimax introduced the Dream Air while still working on the Crystal Super headset announced in April 2024.

The Dream Air boasts an array of specs and features:

  • Weight of 200g
  • Resolution: 13MP (3,840 × 3,552) micro-OLED per-eye @ 90Hz and “HDR”
  • 102° field-of-view
  • Inside-out tracking
  • Motion controllers & hand-tracking
  • On-board audio
  • Optional prescription lenses
  • Eye-tracking
  • Automatic IPD and automatic strap tightening

The automatic strap tightening feature is a unique addition that addresses the challenge of finding the right balance between comfort and stability in wearing a headset. The design of the tightening mechanism is discreetly integrated, giving the impression of a seamless adjustment.

With automatic IPD adjustment and a focus on user convenience, the Dream Air aims to provide a comfortable and immersive VR experience. While the actual delivery of the promised features remains to be seen, Pimax is showcasing a new design approach that departs from its traditional boxy style.

While the Dream Air represents a shift towards compact design, Pimax reassures its commitment to developing larger field-of-view headsets alongside its new offerings.

The Pimax Dream Air is now available for pre-order at $1,900, with an estimated release date of May 2025.
