Our Verdict
Peacemaker season 2 kicks off with action-packed episodes that maintain the show’s signature crude humor. However, the focus on new characters leaves some beloved favorites behind.
Peacemaker season 2 continues the story of Christopher Smith and The 11th Street Kids in the DCU. As the first live-action TV series in this world, it faces the challenge of balancing continuity with new elements introduced by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Having watched the first five episodes of season 2 early, I can say that the show wastes no time getting straight to the action. The pacing is dynamic, but this shift has resulted in some neglect of character development for the original cast.
Season 2 of Peacemaker gets straight down to business
Peacemaker season 2 tackles the ‘DCEU problem’ adeptly, blending humor with a straightforward explanation of the narrative. However, some aspects, particularly character growth, are sacrificed in favor of a fast-paced plot.
Christopher Smith, portrayed by John Cena, remains a flawed and compelling protagonist. His journey of self-discovery continues to be central to the show, keeping audiences engaged with his vulgar yet endearing antics.
Director James Gunn shifts away from the Project Butterfly plot, introducing new conflicts that challenge Chris’s morals. The season is filled with unexpected twists that add depth to the storyline.
While some characters like Economos and Harcourt shine in season 2, others like Adebayo are sidelined and reduced to comic relief. The character dynamics have shifted to focus more on Chris and Harcourt’s evolving relationship.
Two season 1 favorites get a demotion
Adebayo’s character arc in season 2 lacks the complexity seen in season 1, relegating her to a supporting role. Similarly, Vigilante’s storyline is overshadowed by the introduction of new characters, impacting his screen time.
The show aims to explore a nuanced romance between Chris and Harcourt, potentially at the expense of the original characters’ development. However, newcomers like Langston Fleury, played by Tim Meadows, inject fresh energy into the series.
Frank Grillo’s return as Rick Flag Sr. adds a layer of intensity to the narrative, raising the stakes for Peacemaker and his allies.
Can you watch Peacemaker season 2 without context?
Viewers new to the DCU can follow Peacemaker season 2 without prior knowledge, thanks to a brief recap of the first season. However, understanding Chris’s journey and relationships from season 1 enhances the viewing experience.
The transition from DCEU to DCU in season 2 is seamless, with past events and character arcs remaining relevant. While familiarity with previous DCU projects is beneficial, it is not essential for enjoying the series.
Peacemaker season 2 offers a compelling narrative akin to ‘The Boys’, with improved pacing and character development. While some original characters take a back seat, the show’s bloody and ridiculous nature continues to captivate audiences.
Peacemaker season 2 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Thursday, August 21, 2025 in the US, followed by Sky and Now on Friday, August 22, 2025. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly.
