OpenAI’s ‘GPUs are melting’ over Ghibli trend, places limits for paid users

OpenAI has implemented temporary rate limits on image generation using the latest GPT-4o model due to an overwhelming influx of images recreated in a style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli. This decision was made following the recent restriction of image generation capabilities for free ChatGPT users.

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, expressed concerns about the strain on the company’s server infrastructure caused by the surge in image generation. Altman jokingly mentioned that the increased load may be “melting” the GPUs in OpenAI’s data centers, emphasizing the need for better efficiency in handling the demand.

To address these challenges, OpenAI will temporarily limit the rate of image generation while optimizing their systems. While there may be some limitations for ChatGPT users, the company is actively working on resolving these issues. Altman assured that these adjustments will be made quickly.

Furthermore, Altman announced that paid users will have exclusive access to image generation using the latest model, while free users will soon be able to create up to three images per day. However, a specific timeline for this update was not provided.

Despite these restrictions, the internet continues to be flooded with images in Studio Ghibli’s style, indicating that the enthusiasm for recreating visual content remains strong among users.
