OpenAI’s first AI device with Jony Ive won’t be a wearable

Following a trademark lawsuit, details have emerged about what the first AI device from OpenAI and Jony Ive will not be. In recent court filings, leaders from io, the consumer hardware team acquired by OpenAI from Jony Ive’s design studio for $6.5 billion, revealed that the initial device will not be an “in-ear device” or a “wearable.” The anticipated release date for this AI device is set for “at least” 2026.

Tang Tan, io’s chief hardware officer and former Apple design leader, stated in a declaration on June 16th that the prototype referenced by Sam Altman is still at least a year away from being available for sale. Tan clarified that while the design is not yet finalized, it is confirmed that the device is not an in-ear or wearable product.

OpenAI’s opposition to Iyo’s lawsuit on June 12th revealed that io explored various form factors for their device, including desktop-based, mobile, wireless, wired, wearable, and portable options. The company even purchased earbuds, hearing aids, and multiple headphone sets from different manufacturers as part of their early development process.

“thanks but im working on something competitive so will respectfully pass!”

While io’s first hardware piece is confirmed not to be an in-ear device, emails exchanged within the company suggest that the category was under consideration. In one email, an io employee mentioned buying 3D scans of human ears for ergonomic purposes. Additionally, in another email, Altman declined an offer from Iyo, stating that he is working on a competitive project.
