OpenAI comes for Hollywood with Critterz, an AI-powered animated film

OpenAI is making waves in Hollywood by showcasing the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence in producing high-quality content. The company is backing an upcoming animated feature film, “Critterz,” which aims to rival big-budget productions, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Scheduled for a global release in 2026, with a premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, “Critterz” will be predominantly created using OpenAI’s AI tools, including their latest model GPT-5. Despite the model’s recent underwhelming reception, the film is expected to make a significant impact.

With a budget of under $30 million and a production timeline of just nine months, “Critterz” is set to challenge the norms of animated filmmaking, which typically require substantially higher investments. OpenAI, in collaboration with Native Foreign and Vertigo Films, aims to prove the potential of AI in the industry, despite existing skepticism from industry professionals and audiences regarding its adoption and impact on creativity and intellectual property.
