The Nintendo Switch has seen incredible success, with the original console selling around 146 million units. It currently holds the title of the third-best-selling console of all time, trailing behind the Nintendo DS and the PS2. With the announcement of the Switch 2, it’s unlikely that the OG Switch will claim the top spot, but it has solidified its place as one of the best-selling consoles in history. There are high expectations for its successor, but one analyst believes that the Switch 2 may not reach the same level of success as its predecessor.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Mat Piscatella from market research firm Circana expressed his thoughts on the Switch 2’s potential success. He believes that while the Switch 2 could be a massive hit, it may not surpass the original Switch. Piscatella mentioned that predicting the success of an outlier like the Switch is challenging. He noted that the enhanced features of the Switch 2, such as being bigger and more powerful, may not be enough to attract a new audience beyond existing Switch owners.
The initial trailer for the Switch 2 showcases its larger size and new Mario Kart game, which is exciting but may not be a significant selling point for the console. Piscatella mentioned that there could be more surprises in store that have not been leaked yet. Fans will have to wait for the official Direct to learn more about the Switch 2’s features.
Even if the Switch 2 doesn’t reach the same sales numbers as the original, it is expected to perform well, especially considering the exclusive Nintendo games available only on Nintendo consoles. Fans are eager to see what the upcoming Direct will reveal about the Switch 2.
