The market for mini PCs has been steadily growing in recent years, offering compact and affordable systems for various tasks like office work, media streaming, or lightweight computing. One such option is the NiPoGi AK1PLUS Mini PC, which focuses on basic performance while being budget-friendly. Powered by the Intel N97 processor, it offers slightly better performance compared to similar models with N100 or N150 chips, although it does have its own quirks and limitations. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the NiPoGi AK1PLUS, comparing its hardware to other processors in the same family, evaluating its design, performance, and overall value for money, specifically for potential buyers in the UK market.

I have previously reviewed the NiPoGi E1, and now NiPoGi has provided the AK1PLUS for evaluation. While it shares similarities with the E1, it comes with an upgraded Intel N97 CPU and enhanced connectivity with WiFi 6 instead of WiFi 5. Despite the design resemblance to other models in the range, there are subtle differences that are worth exploring. This analysis will cover the specifications, build quality, performance metrics, and practical usability, along with a comparison of the Intel N97 with N100 and N150 processors to provide clarity on where this device stands in the lineup.

**Unboxing:**
The NiPoGi AK1PLUS follows the typical mini PC form factor, being compact enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Its small size makes it ideal for space-constrained environments like small offices or home entertainment setups. The casing, available in a dark grey color, has a functional rather than premium appearance. Ventilation is provided through a side panel with an RGB status indicator that changes color based on the system state. While the light can be useful in low-light conditions, it may be less visible in brighter settings.

The I/O layout includes a front panel with power/reset buttons and USB ports, while additional connections like power input, HDMI ports, LAN port, and microphone jack are located on the side. The unconventional placement of ports on the side may lead to a less tidy cable setup, depending on the user’s desk arrangement.

**Upgradeability:**
The NiPoGi AK1PLUS features an unusual design for upgrade options. The base has latches and screw holes that open up a compartment for a 2.5” SSD. The lid can be removed to access limited upgrade options, including a visible SATA port but no standard power connector. The cooling fan also blocks access to other components, making it challenging to upgrade the RAM or other parts.

**Set Up – Software Concerns – Chrome with navwithus search:**
Setting up the AK1PLUS may involve some deviations from the standard Windows installation process, including pre-installed software modifications like Google Chrome with a custom search engine called “navwithus.” While security scans revealed no immediate threats, the presence of modified software raises concerns about trust and transparency. It’s recommended to reset the PC or reinstall Windows to address these issues.

**BIOS Settings:**
The BIOS settings of the NiPoGi AK1PLUS are accessible but are limited in terms of customization and upgrade options. Users can adjust basic settings but may find the upgrade process challenging due to the design constraints.

**Performance:**
The NiPoGi AK1PLUS performs adequately for basic office tasks, web browsing, and media streaming, thanks to the Intel N97 processor and 16GB of RAM. While modern games may struggle to run smoothly, older titles perform better, showcasing the system’s capabilities for casual or retro gaming.

**Price and Alternative Options:**
The NiPoGi AK1PLUS is competitively priced at £170, with discounts available, making it an affordable option for users looking for a budget-friendly mini PC. Alternative options like the NiPoGi E2, NiPoGi E1, Huidun H20, and GMKtec Nucbox G5 offer similar specifications at varying price points.

**Overall:**
Despite concerns about modified software and upgrade limitations, the NiPoGi AK1PLUS offers a reliable and cost-effective computing solution for basic tasks. It is recommended for users willing to reinstall Windows upon purchase to address software concerns. The compact design, adequate performance, and connectivity options make it a suitable choice for non-demanding applications.
