Nintendo has hinted at a mysterious new project with the hashtag “Who is Emio?” and I must say, it’s quite unsettling.
Hey Nintendo, are you doing okay? Do you need someone to check up on you? Because you just posted a strange tweet linking to a video simply titled Emio, featuring blurry footage of a man in a trench coat wearing a paper bag with a smiley face on it. Yeah, that’s definitely not normal. If you think this is some kind of prank, I wish I could assure you it is, but no, Nintendo has actually chosen to release this on a random Wednesday. The video concludes with some Japanese text that machine translation suggests translates to “smiling man,” which doesn’t really shed any more light or comfort on this bizarre situation.
There is also a website you can visit, but it doesn’t provide any additional information; it essentially just features the same video as above. However, you can get a closer look at the man in the smiling brown paper bag – it appears there are a few different bags that Emio (presumably the character) wears, one with crescent moon eyes and a big, filled-in smile, and another with round eyes and an equally wide smile, albeit with teeth. Although Nintendo isn’t typically associated with creating games for mature audiences, the trailer does carry a Mature 17+ rating, indicating that the game will likely fall into that category.
This seems to be shaping up as a horror game, making it potentially Nintendo’s first first-party title in that genre (if we exclude Luigi’s Mansion). I’m sure we’ll uncover more about Emio in the near future, but until then, I’ll be scratching my head in confusion.
