Nintendo Switch 2 "cannot come soon enough", analyst says for sales-related reasons, rather than just being desperate to play things on it like the rest of us

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 was recently unveiled, sparking excitement among fans. The focus has now shifted from ‘when will the Switch 2 be revealed?’ to ‘when will the Switch 2 be released?’

Following Nintendo’s latest financial report, industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games expressed that the arrival of the Switch 2 “cannot come soon enough.” This urgency is fueled by the underwhelming sales performance of its predecessor, which has led Nintendo to lower its sales forecast for the fiscal year.

The latest earnings report revealed a decline in Switch hardware sales by over 30% compared to the previous year. Software sales have also dropped by 24%, signaling a need for revamped game offerings. Titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder contributed significantly to sales in 2023, whereas newer releases in 2024 like Super Mario Party Jamboree and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom have not performed as strongly.

With sales figures for these titles ranging from 1.4 to 6.17 million units, it is evident that Nintendo is facing challenges in maintaining the momentum of the Switch platform. Dr. Toto pointed out that Nintendo’s overestimation of the Switch’s longevity has led to the current sales predicament.

Looking ahead, Dr. Toto emphasized the importance of a robust game lineup for Nintendo to regain momentum in the market. The impending arrival of the Switch 2 is eagerly awaited, with hopes that it will inject new life into Nintendo’s gaming ecosystem.
