Nintendo confirms the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility, so your plan to celebrate its release with a giant shark chase on jet skis still looks on

I have exciting news to share! Nintendo has confirmed that the successor to the Nintendo Switch, often referred to as the Switch 2, will have backwards compatibility for Switch games. This means you won’t have to worry about your favorite games being quickly ported to the new hardware so you can continue playing them in public without losing any street cred.

This confirmation comes directly from Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, in an official tweet that has a mix of business-like language and a touch of casual energy that you wouldn’t expect.

“This is Furukawa,” the executive wrote, “At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.

“Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.” So, you’ll be able to play older Switch games on the new Switch, which is great news. In fact, even investors have reacted positively to this announcement, according to Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games.

Looking forward to playing original Switch games on the Switch 2 when it releases, you might be able to experience some thrilling gameplay, like escaping from a giant shark on a jet ski. If you own Ace Angler: Fishing Spirits, a fishing game released on Switch in 2022, you can enjoy running an aquarium-themed park and participating in exciting mini-games with your friends.

I haven’t played it myself, but if I can do so on Switch 2, I might actually give it a try. With the official name of the Switch 2 yet to be confirmed, specific games tailored for the new console have not been announced. We’re getting teasers like Yooka-Replaylee coming to “future Nintendo Platforms,” so stay tuned for more updates.
