New Leak Hints at Under Display Face ID for iPhone 18 Pro

Rumors suggest that Apple may introduce its under-display Face ID technology with the next year’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup. This technology has been long-awaited and there is evidence to support the claim that Apple is working on it.

A leaker known as “Smart Pikachu” on Weibo has revealed that Apple is testing new materials necessary for an under-display Face ID sensor. While Smart Pikachu is not a prominent figure in Apple rumors, their track record with accurate details on Chinese Android hardware lends credibility to this information.

The testing reportedly involves “micro-transparent glass panels” that could enable infrared signal transmission through the glass, similar to the technology used in the current Face ID system.

It is uncertain whether Apple will fully integrate the camera array under the display or just reduce the size of the existing notch with the upcoming models. Previous reports have suggested a two-stage approach, with the Face ID sensor moving under the display first.

If Apple implements under-display Face ID in the iPhone 18 Pro models, it aligns with the rumored strategy of eventually achieving a seamless, notch-free screen with the selfie camera also under the display.

Display analyst Ross Young has predicted the inclusion of under-panel Face ID in the iPhone 18 Pro, indicating a potential shift in camera technology as well.

While other reports mention a pinhole cutout in the display or a reduced Dynamic Island, Apple’s focus seems to be on enhancing camera capabilities rather than hiding them under the screen.

Despite attempts by other manufacturers to place cameras under displays, the quality has not met the standards expected by customers, especially Apple’s discerning user base.

Apple continues to improve its front camera technology, with rumors suggesting a 24 MP front camera in the iPhone 18 Pro. The company prioritizes camera capabilities over hiding them under the screen.
