Motorola phones have 3 serious problems that need to go away in 2025

A few months ago, I had the chance to test out several Motorola smartphones. They have a sleek design and definitely catch the eye, although some releases seem to be following Samsung’s design trends. However, Samsung is facing its own challenges, so there’s a bit of consolation there.

One could argue that Motorola is offering some great phones with premium features and competitive prices. However, it’s clear that Motorola is facing some issues, especially from the perspective of recent users who have purchased Moto smartphones.

Below are some of the common complaints from loyal Motorola users, highlighting the brand’s ongoing struggles. These could serve as opportunities for improvement as Motorola moves into the 2025 calendar year.

Bloatware: brazen or sneaky?

Last year, DailyTech’ Mobile Section Editor Joe Maring highlighted his experience with Motorola phones throughout the year and what the brand needs to address as 2025 approaches.

One of the main issues raised in the article was the amount of bloatware. The association of Android with unnecessary and questionable software is not a new story. Some brands have taken steps to address this after facing criticism.

Unfortunately, Motorola seems to have gone in the opposite direction in an ironic way. When you buy a Motorola phone, the first thing you notice is the near-stock Android experience similar to Pixel devices. However, beneath the surface lies a different story.

Reports have surfaced on Reddit, X, and product forums indicating automatic installation of bloatware, with MotoApps being a common culprit. Users have complained about software updates downloading ad-filled apps without consent in the background.

Users have proposed solutions such as deactivating MotoApps, disabling Moto Services, and opting for unlocked phones instead of carrier versions. However, these are not ideal solutions.

The issue raises questions about why users are burdened with unwanted apps through “optimization updates” without their consent. It’s like a calculator app requesting location access when it doesn’t need such permissions.

The lock screen experience is also tainted by an intrusive app called Taboola, which displays ads on the lock screen based on user “interests.” Removing this requires running an ADB command, and even then, the app may re-enable itself.

Users have expressed frustration with these issues, with some resorting to installing custom ROMs to break away from Motorola’s software ecosystem, despite the risks involved.

Motorola phone users have voiced their discontent, and there are tutorials available to help users deal with the lock screen adware. However, the process is not straightforward, and some have ended up bricking their phones in the attempt.

A long trail of connectivity woes

Phones are primarily used for making calls and sending texts, so it’s crucial that they maintain a reliable cellular connection. However, Motorola smartphone users have been reporting connectivity issues, especially with 5G networks.

Complaints about 5G connectivity problems have persisted for years, with users facing issues despite software updates. The problem seems to be widespread, with reports from various countries including North America.

Customer support personnel at authorized Motorola service centers have been tight-lipped about these issues, and users have struggled to find a concrete solution. Some attribute the problem to a software update, while others suspect hardware flaws.

Users have tried various troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists, leading some to switch to 3G mode for a temporary fix. Carriers have acknowledged the antenna quality as a potential issue on Motorola phones.

Efforts to address the connectivity issues have been met with limited success, and users continue to face disruptions in their network connections. The lack of a definitive solution has left many frustrated with their Motorola phones.

Gee, Motorola, fix the Moto G!

The Moto G series was once a standout in the Android market, offering a compelling package at an affordable price. However, recent iterations of the Moto G phones have failed to live up to the series’ reputation.

Motorola’s budget G-series phones have received poor reviews, with devices like the Moto G Power 5G 2024 and Moto G 5G 2024 struggling to impress critics. While the hardware design of phones like the G85 is commendable, software issues have plagued the user experience.

Motorola needs to focus on refining its budget offerings and addressing the issues that have plagued recent releases. By listening to user feedback and staying true to its strengths, Motorola can regain its reputation in the market.

Motorola has the potential to make a comeback by focusing on its strengths and addressing the key issues affecting its products. By staying true to its heritage and delivering quality devices, Motorola can carve out a solid niche in the competitive smartphone market.

While challenges remain, Motorola has the resources and expertise to overcome them. By listening to user feedback and adapting to market trends, Motorola can chart a successful path forward in the coming year.
