Ukrainian Air Force Receives Mixed Reality F-16 Simulator for Pilot Training
Flight simulator company Dogfight Boss, in collaboration with Varjo, a leading XR headset creator, has successfully shipped their first mixed reality F-16 simulator to the Ukrainian Air Force. This initiative aims to enhance pilot training and support the country’s transition to American-built fighter jets.
Recently, Ukraine has begun receiving F-16s from NATO countries like Denmark and the Netherlands to replace its older Soviet-era aircraft. With Belgium and Norway also joining to provide over 60 F-16s, the need for advanced training facilities has become crucial.
Recognizing the limitations of existing training programs in the US and Europe, Ukrainian pilots faced challenges in accessing sufficient training opportunities. To address this issue, Dogfight Boss and Varjo have introduced a MR headset-equipped F-16 C Viper simulator at a Fighter Pilot Base in Kyiv. This simulator enables pilots to engage in virtual missions while observing their instrument cluster, resulting in a more immersive training experience.
Despite the ongoing training constraints, the introduction of this simulator allows Ukrainian pilots to enhance their skills locally, especially in a region affected by conflict since the Russian invasion in 2022.
Following positive feedback on the MR simulator, Dogfight Boss plans to deliver additional units to support collaborative training scenarios within the Ukrainian military. CEO Lukas Homola emphasizes the precision and excellence of the simulator, highlighting its in-house development and high-quality components.
Both Varjo and Dogfight Boss, with their extensive experience in working with defense clients, have contributed significantly to the advancement of training technologies. Varjo’s XR headset is currently utilized by various defense entities, including the U.S. Army RVCT program for helicopter training.
