Markus “Notch” Persson Announces Spiritual Successor to Minecraft

Original Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has revealed his plans for a new project that he describes as a spiritual successor to Minecraft, even going so far as to jokingly call it “Minecraft 2.”

After conducting a poll at the start of the year, Notch received overwhelming feedback in favor of him developing a game similar to Minecraft rather than continuing with his current retro project.

For the past few years, Notch has been working on a game with a retro feel, inspired by classic first-person dungeon crawlers like Wizardry. However, he has decided to pivot towards creating a new game that captures the essence of Minecraft.

Notch humorously stated, “I also very much value being a man of my word,” as he confirmed his intention to pursue the development of a game that is a spiritual successor to Minecraft.

While acknowledging the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, Notch expressed his determination to deliver a game that fans will appreciate and support.

Despite the success of Minecraft under Microsoft’s ownership, Notch remains committed to creating a new experience that pays homage to his original creation.

Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, continues to provide updates and new content for the game, while Microsoft explores opportunities to expand the brand, including an upcoming live-action Minecraft movie.
