The potential of smart glasses as the future of personal computing is a topic of much debate. Could they eventually replace our smartphones, like the iPhone? Only time will tell.

Early adopters of Apple’s Vision Pro have been somewhat disappointed with the heavy and limited-use headset, priced at $3,500. Speculations suggest that a lighter and more affordable version of Vision Pro, along with true smart glasses, might be in the works, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

On the other hand, there are reports indicating that Meta’s next-generation smart glasses, under the project “Hypernova,” could be just a month away. These glasses are expected to be more budget-friendly, starting at $800, which is $200 less than initially anticipated and in line with the pricing of the base model of the iPhone 17.

While $800 is a higher price point compared to Meta’s $499 Quest 3S VR headset, the company is optimistic that the affordability of their new smart glasses will encourage wider adoption.

Meta’s upcoming smart glasses are rumored to feature a display for one eye, positioned discreetly in the lower right corner behind the lens. This design aims to enhance functionality while minimizing distractions, requiring users to purposefully look downward to check the display.

The updated Ray-Ban smart glasses from Meta are expected to include an improved camera, map viewing capabilities, social notifications, media viewing, and gesture control through a wristband. These glasses will likely incorporate AI integration and offer the option for prescription lenses, with the ability to use HSA or FSA for payment.

With Meta and potentially Apple entering the smart glasses market, along with Google’s recent unveiling of their own smart glasses, it seems that a new era of personal computing is approaching. Are smart glasses a viable alternative to our beloved iPhones? Only time and user experiences will tell. Will you be an early adopter with Meta or wait for Apple’s offering?
