Meta Reverses Decision to Shut Down VR Access to Horizon Worlds
After originally announcing the closure of the VR version of Horizon Worlds, Meta has now revealed that some VR experiences will still be available on Quest moving forward.
Earlier this week, Meta stated that it would be removing Horizon Worlds and Events from the Quest Store on March 31st and completely shutting down VR access to the app by June 15th, making it a flatscreen-only experience for mobile and PC users.
However, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth recently shared on Instagram during a Q&A session that certain worlds within Horizon Worlds will remain VR-accessible for the time being.
“We have decided, just today in fact, that we will keep Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games to support the fans that’ve reached out and really care about that,” Bosworth explained.
It appears that legacy worlds within Horizon Worlds will be VR-exclusive, indicating a clear platform split.
“The Horizon Unity runtime games won’t be accessible on mobile, only in VR. We won’t be introducing new games for VR as our focus is primarily on mobile and the Meta Horizon Engine. The legacy version of Horizon Worlds will remain VR-accessible for the foreseeable future,” Bosworth added.
Notably, Horizon Worlds was initially based on the Unity game engine until Meta announced the transition to its own Horizon Engine at Connect 2025, promising faster loading times and the ability to host over 100 users in a single space.
As of now, Meta has not provided detailed plans on how the platform split will be executed. Updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available.
