Meta Aims to Double, Possibly Even Triple Smart Glasses Production This Year

Meta and EssilorLuxottica Set to Increase Smart Glasses Production Targets

Recent reports from Bloomberg suggest that Meta and EssilorLuxottica are considering doubling their expected production target for smart glasses.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Meta is looking to increase annual capacity to 20 million units by the end of 2026, with the possibility of exceeding 30 million units if demand remains strong. Talks are still ongoing, according to Bloomberg.

EssilorLuxottica, the creator of Ray-Ban, announced in February 2025 that they were ramping up production capacity to 10 million annual units by the end of 2026. This move comes after the success of the first-gen Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which saw 2 million units sold in 2023.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica currently offer two types of smart glasses: audio-only AI-centric frames in Oakley and Ray-Ban styles, and Meta Ray-Ban Display, which features a full-color display embedded in the right lens.

In related news, Meta has delayed the international rollout of the $800 Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses in the UK, France, Italy, and Canada due to “unprecedented demand and limited inventory.”

On another front, Meta is restructuring its Reality Labs XR division by laying off around 10 percent of staff. This move is part of a strategic shift towards focusing on AI and smart glasses over VR and metaverse ambitions, as reported by The New York Times.
