Math Notes Leaps Into the Third Dimension in iPadOS 26

iPadOS 26 Math Notes 3D Graphing hero

It’s quite interesting that one of the major updates introduced to the iPad in the previous year’s iPadOS 18 update was the Calculator app. Surprisingly, the iPhone had a calculator right from its launch in 2007, while the iPad, launched three years later, took another 14 years to catch up.

But the wait was worth it. The new iPad Calculator wasn’t just a basic numeric keypad; Apple introduced a smart feature called Math Notes. This feature, although technically part of the iPadOS 18 Notes app, was seamlessly integrated into the Calculator app, enhancing the math experience on Apple’s tablet. It made performing math calculations so smooth that one could almost forget about the standard Calculator keypad.

The Notes app on all three of Apple’s platforms gained the ability to perform typed calculations, but only the iPad received the sleek chalkboard-style experience, thanks to the Apple Pencil. Math Notes was an extension of various stylus-related features on the iPad, such as Smart Script for improving handwritten text and identifying spelling mistakes in real-time.

With the use of machine learning to recognize and refine handwriting, Apple’s engineers took it a step further by enabling the recognition of mathematical equations. The iPad could now solve algebraic equations by recognizing variables and their values.

Apple didn’t stop there. Users could create 2D graphs from equations with two variables, providing a visual representation of the possible values on X and Y axes. And now, with iOS 26, users can take it even further by plotting 3D graphs using a third variable and axis.

The 3D graph feature allows users to visualize complex equations in a three-dimensional space, offering practical applications beyond just mathematical exploration. Users can manipulate and rotate the 3D graphs to better understand their data.

As with the 2D graph feature, the new 3D graphs can only be created on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26. Saved graphs can be viewed in the macOS Tahoe 26 Notes app as static images.
