Marvel's "What If...?" for Apple Vision Pro looks incredible, but plays terribly

Marvel and ILM Interactive have collaborated to bring the What If…? experience to Apple Vision Pro users. This interactive adventure reimagines Marvel characters in various intriguing scenarios, such as exploring an alternate reality where the Allies lost World War 2 and Captain America’s experiment failed.

The experience begins with the imposing figure of The Watcher standing tall in a family room, surrounded by toys, cats, and a TV. As a mystical apprentice with powers akin to Doctor Strange, players are tasked with saving the multiverse. While the detailed environments and character animations are impressive, the gameplay falls short of expectations.

The lack of a dedicated VR controller hampers the interactive elements, making it feel more like a passive experience akin to a theme park ride. Despite its flaws, What If…? showcases the potential of immersive storytelling on the Vision Pro platform.

Throughout the adventure, players encounter alternate versions of familiar characters, adding depth to the narrative. The blend of virtual and augmented reality environments enhances the immersion, although the constant pop-ups about surroundings disrupt the flow.

Overall, What If…? offers a brief but entertaining Marvel experience, serving as a welcome diversion from the usual MCU content. While there is room for improvement in the gameplay mechanics, this collaboration sets the stage for future AR and VR projects from Marvel and ILM Interactive. Perhaps a Vision Pro controller could enhance the experience further in the future.
