Many are the nostalgic 2D Sonic fangames, but Sonic Galactic might be the best

The last time I discussed a Sonic fangame, I mistakenly referred to it as “SNES-style”, which sparked a wave of criticism on social media. Sonic Galactic, created by Starteam, is an incredibly well-executed fangame that envisions how the classic Mega Drive and Genesis platformers might have appeared on the Sega Saturn. A new demo is available for those interested in trying it out on Itch.io. You can download it here. Perhaps if I had included the download link earlier in my previous article, I could have avoided the backlash.

When evaluating any post-Mega Drive Sonic game, the key question is which sidekicks are included. The addition of side characters has often diluted the essence of Sonic as a platforming icon. However, Sonic Galactic introduces Fang the Sniper and Tunnel the Mole alongside Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, each with their unique abilities. These characters enhance the classic Sonic experience of navigating through intricate levels filled with loops, ramps, and hazards.

Having played the demo, I noticed the game stays true to the essence of the Mega Drive titles while incorporating new elements. It feels like a natural evolution of the Sonic 3 design, featuring familiar power-ups and new abilities like wall-kicking and water-running. Compared to Sonic Mania, Galactic takes a more traditional approach to gameplay rather than focusing on remixing older elements.

The special 3D stages in Sonic Galactic showcase the potential of the Sega Saturn console, known for its capabilities despite being overshadowed by the PlayStation 1. The chiptune soundtrack captures the nostalgic essence of the Sonic series at its peak.

Although Sonic Galactic was announced in 2020, a release date is yet to be confirmed. I encourage you to try out the demo and experience the Sonic thrill in a new light.
