Longstanding Darktrace CEO Poppy Gustafsson to step down

Darktrace CEO Poppy Gustafsson has made the decision to step down from her position with immediate effect, and will be succeeded by the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Jill Popelka, who specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) cybersecurity.

This change comes following a significant acquisition of the UK-based firm by US private equity firm Thoma Bravo, which was finalized in early 2024.

Gustafsson, one of Darktrace’s original employees recruited by the late founder Mike Lynch, started her career at consultancy Deloitte after earning a mathematics degree from the University of Sheffield. She held various roles within Darktrace before becoming CEO in 2016.

In a statement, Gustafsson expressed pride in the company’s achievements and the impact they’ve had on the cybersecurity market. She mentioned that the timing was right for her to pass the leadership to Jill Popelka as Darktrace transitions into private ownership.

Popelka, who joined Darktrace as a non-executive director earlier in 2024 and was appointed as COO in June, brings with her 25 years of experience in the tech industry, including roles at SAP and Snap Inc.

Popelka acknowledged the strong foundation built by Gustafsson and the team, emphasizing the immense potential of Darktrace’s technology and the talented workforce driving the company forward.

Influential on AI

Gustafsson’s leadership at Darktrace earned her recognition, including being named Computer Weekly’s Most Influential Woman in UK Technology in 2021. She emphasized the importance of diverse skillsets in building a successful tech business.

She highlighted the significance of AI in cybersecurity and the need for a blend of technical and non-technical skills to effectively communicate its benefits to customers.

Increased profile

Darktrace’s early adoption of AI technology and strategic partnerships, such as with McLaren in Formula 1, have elevated the company’s profile in the industry. Gustafsson’s involvement in AI discussions further showcased Darktrace’s innovative approach to cybersecurity.

She expressed pride in advancing AI technology and enabling organizations to embrace its potential safely, likening her role to providing a seatbelt for navigating the evolving landscape of AI.
