We recently had the opportunity to try out the latest Lenovo Legion Glasses 2, a pair of smart glasses that can serve as a replacement for a large monitor, especially for entertainment purposes. The advancements in smart glasses virtual display technology over the past few years have made them much more user-friendly and comfortable to use.
If you haven’t had the chance to experience these smart glasses yet, you can easily connect them to your device (smartphone, PC, tablet, etc.) via USB-C. However, do note that they will only work if your device supports video output via USB-C, so be sure to consult the user manual. Once connected, you’ll see a mirrored image of your device on the glasses, giving you the feeling of looking at a screen a few yards away.
The viewing experience is akin to watching a large TV screen, with the glasses blocking out external light to create the illusion of a dark background. Lenovo also provides an additional cover for use in bright environments.
With a resolution of 1080p (FHD), the glasses are perfect for watching movies and streaming content, although they may not offer the same image quality as a traditional TV. Nevertheless, the viewing experience is immersive and enjoyable without any major distractions.
During travel, the Legion Glasses 2 outperform most in-flight entertainment options, including the screens in Business Class. Personally, I find them handy even at home when I want to relax outdoors while watching a show.
So, what’s new in the Legion Glasses 2 compared to their predecessors?
- The weight has been reduced to 65g from 96g, significantly improving comfort on the head and nose. This weight reduction sets them apart from heavier competitors.
- The brightness now reaches 800 NITs, although most users may prefer lower brightness settings, especially in dimly lit environments.
- The design has been refined to resemble standard Aviator-style glasses.
- The refresh rate has been increased to 120Hz from 60Hz in the previous version.
- The glasses now utilize DisplayPort 1.4, an improvement over the previous version’s use of DisplayPort 1.2.
Overall, these upgrades position Lenovo competitively in the smart glasses market, offering a compelling user experience.
It’s important to note that while using the Legion Glasses 2, your original monitor or screen will remain active. Additionally, when connected to a phone or tablet, the glasses draw power from the device, leading to faster battery drain. Despite this, the enhanced viewing experience makes it a worthwhile trade-off. To mitigate battery issues, consider wireless charging for your device while connected to the glasses via USB-C.
