Left-leaning influencers embrace Bluesky without abandoning X, Pew says

It’s no surprise that many prominent left-leaning social media accounts have recently joined Bluesky — but a new study from the Pew Research Center aims to quantify this trend.

This update builds on Pew’s influencer report from November 2024, which focused on 500 influencers with over 100,000 followers on major platforms who regularly discuss current events, but did not include Bluesky in its analysis.

In this Bluesky-focused update, Pew found that 43% of the same influencers had a Bluesky account in February/March, with 51% of those accounts created after the 2024 presidential election.

The shift to Bluesky is more pronounced among left-leaning influencers, with 69% of liberal or Democratic accounts supporting Kamala Harris or Joe Biden making the move, compared to only 15% of conservative accounts.

The move to Bluesky does not appear to be at the expense of X (formerly Twitter), as 82% of influencers still maintain an account on X, with most posting more frequently there than on Bluesky.

Although most left-leaning influencers have not abandoned X, activity on Bluesky is increasing, with the number of influencers actively posting on the platform rising from 54% in January to 66% in March.
