It sounds like Apple will continue a positive CarPlay trend around iOS 27

When Apple showcased the “next-generation CarPlay” in 2022, it seemed like Apple had halted the development of the current CarPlay version used by drivers. Eventually, the next-gen CarPlay evolved into CarPlay Ultra, and CarPlay for non-Aston Martin drivers began to see new enhancements. It appears that this trend will continue with upcoming updates, potentially in iOS 27.

Recent CarPlay Upgrades

CarPlay in iOS 26 incorporates features from CarPlay Ultra such as widgets and theming, all on a single screen without the need for multiple displays.

Widgets in CarPlay enable users to display weather updates and other information without the need for dedicated CarPlay apps. Additionally, theming options for icons provide a more personalized touch to the interface.

The latest version of CarPlay also includes improved AirPods audio routing, enhanced features for messaging apps, and more.

AI Chatbots in the Car

Looking forward, Apple is planning a significant CarPlay feature – voice-based chatbots. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple intends to enable chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini to work with CarPlay, offering a more versatile AI experience for drivers. Siri is also expected to become more capable in iOS 26.4, enhancing the CarPlay user experience.

Introducing AI chatbots as a separate feature from Siri’s development signifies Apple’s commitment to enhancing CarPlay without overwhelming the car’s display. This move aligns with the positive trajectory initiated in iOS 26.

Hopefully, AI chatbots will be integrated into CarPlay as a supported app category in iOS 26, ensuring drivers do not have to wait until iOS 27 in September. In the meantime, widgets provide a practical workaround. Apple’s adaptability to evolving car needs is evident in its continuous improvements to CarPlay.
