iPhone Trade-In: Who Pays the Most?

Apple iPhone trade in kit ready to be shipped with a shallow depth of field and copy space

Many individuals are likely contemplating upgrading their iPhones. The decision to hold onto their current device or switch amidst the ongoing tariff and supply chain challenges is a tough one. However, with looming price hikes, many are considering making the move.

A recent TikTok video by creator Simba (8aminthemornin) went viral as she shared her experience of trading in her iPhone with T-Mobile and Apple. T-Mobile allegedly rejected her trade-in due to water damage claims, while Apple offered her $130. The video has garnered 2.3 million views, sparking curiosity among iPhone users like myself who are debating whether to stick with the iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB. To explore the trade-in market further, I decided to investigate. Here are my findings.

Carrier: Verizon

Similar to 8aminthemornin, I initiated my investigation with Verizon, my carrier. Without factoring in any specific promotions for new or existing customers, Verizon indicated a $206 trade-in value for the iPhone 13 Pro with 128 GB storage. While this may seem relatively low as a standalone trade-in offer, Verizon presents an appealing upgrade deal for existing customers, providing bill credits over 36 months based on the new iPhone chosen. Verizon states they accept phones in any condition, as long as they have been active with Verizon for at least 60 days and are from Apple, Google, Motorola, or Samsung, which is a decent deal.

Apple

Apple iPhone Trade In

Apple is offering a trade-in value of $310 towards a new iPhone or $280 in the form of an Apple Gift Card. Both options are significantly more lucrative than Verizon’s offer. The gift card option is especially attractive for those interested in acquiring another Apple device or seeking better deals from other carriers on new iPhones. Furthermore, Apple’s trade-in program does not appear to consider storage capacity, potentially benefitting owners with lower storage models.

Best Buy

Best Buy Trade In

Best Buy offers a slightly higher trade-in value compared to Verizon, though still lower than Apple’s offer. This may come as a surprise since Best Buy is known to be competitive with trade-ins. Nonetheless, considering the age of the phone being traded in, the offer is reasonable. Additionally, the trade-in value can be used towards a new purchase at Best Buy or exchanged for a Best Buy gift card, providing customers with flexibility to explore other products.

Gazelle

Gazelle iPhone Trade

Gazelle, an online electronics exchange, has facilitated the sale of nearly 4 million devices since 2008. As one of the original online marketplaces for buying and selling used phones and laptops, Gazelle offers payment via check (within 14 days), PayPal, or an Amazon gift card. While their $223 trade-in value may not match Apple’s offer, Gazelle stands out as the only option explored here where individuals can receive cash for their iPhones.

If time is not a constraint, alternative online marketplaces like Swappa can be considered. Swappa allows users to directly buy and sell to one another, charging only a 3% fee. While this option may require more time and effort, the potential rewards could be significant. It’s important to note that these are not the only avenues for selling or trading in your iPhone, and the outcomes can vary based on the specific model and specifications. For those ready to part ways with their current iPhones, this analysis serves as a valuable starting point.
