Even though current iPhone models offer decent battery life, they still lag behind some rival Android smartphones that provide two-day battery life. Apple has not made significant strides in this area in recent years, with incremental improvements in each new iPhone lineup.
However, this year could bring a change, not due to better battery technology but because of enhanced artificial intelligence. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to introduce an AI-powered battery management mode in iOS 19. This mode will automatically adjust power consumption based on your iPhone usage to conserve energy.
This feature could potentially improve battery life on older iPhone models eligible for the update. It may require newer power management chips or other battery technology exclusive to this year’s iPhone 17 lineup, limiting its availability on older devices.
Gurman’s sources refer to the technology as part of the Apple Intelligence platform, suggesting it may only be accessible on devices capable of supporting Apple’s AI suite, like the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple made significant battery changes in the iPhone 15 lineup two years ago, introducing new charge limit features and enhanced battery health metrics.
Apple’s primary goal with this innovation is not to achieve two-day battery life for iPhone 17 Pro Max users but to ensure the upcoming “iPhone 17 Air” can last a full day on a single charge.
The driving force behind the battery feature is Apple’s slimmed-down iPhone 17, which will offer a thinner design and a smaller battery capacity compared to standard and Pro models.

Despite this, Gurman confirms that the battery feature will be available for all iPhones running iOS 19. It remains unclear whether it will be automatically enabled or require manual activation as a power-saving mode.
Sources suggest Apple is developing a new AI power-saving mode using aggregated battery data from users’ devices to train AI models on optimizing power consumption for specific applications or features.
Gurman also mentions that users will see an estimated charging time on the iOS 19 Lock Screen, indicating Apple’s preparation for this feature since at least iOS 18.2.
