iOS beta code includes new references to Apple's upcoming smart display home product

Apple was rumored to be unveiling its smart display product in the spring, but the launch was put on hold due to issues with Siri features.

Despite the delay, new assets for the device have been discovered in the iOS 18.6 beta release. These assets may reveal the screen resolution of the device…

The newly added file in the code can be found at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProgressUI.framework/apple-logo-1088@2x~home.png.

The ‘home’ suffix indicates that this asset is intended for the homeOS platform. The filename also hints at the device’s specifications.

In the directory, Apple has included various Apple logo assets for different screen sizes of iOS devices. For example, there is one named apple-logo-2532 for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, which have a screen resolution of 2532×1170.

The new asset’s filename includes the number 1088 at a 2x scale, suggesting a screen resolution of 2176 pixels wide for the home device.

This resolution is similar to the iPad mini’s display, which has a resolution of 2266×1488 and a screen size of 8.3 inches. This aligns with previous reports of Apple testing homeOS/tvOS on an iPad mini.

It is speculated that the smart display will have a screen size around 8 inches, potentially with a lower pixel density than the iPad mini.

Reports suggest that the Apple smart display home hub will feature a 7-inch screen, indicating a lower pixel density than the iPad mini. This could help reduce manufacturing costs for Apple.

While the addition of new assets does not provide a clear timeline for the product’s release, it indicates that Apple is actively working on the device behind the scenes.
