iOS 17.4: Apple continues work on AI-powered Siri and Messages features, with help from ChatGPT

Gurman: iOS 18 AI features to be powered by 'entirely on-device' LLM, offering privacy and speed benefits

Apple is gearing up to introduce significant new artificial intelligence capabilities with the release of iOS 18 in June. Evidence uncovered by 9to5Mac in the initial beta of iOS 17.4 indicates that Apple is working on enhancing Siri with the use of large language model technology, in collaboration with external sources.

It appears that Apple is currently utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT API for internal testing to support the advancement of its own AI models.

The code within iOS 17.4 reveals the presence of a new SiriSummarization private framework that interacts with OpenAI’s ChatGPT API. This framework seems to be employed by Apple for internal testing purposes related to their upcoming AI features.

Various system prompts for the SiriSummarization framework can also be found in iOS 17.4, such as requests for summarization, answering questions, and summarizing text. Additionally, there are mentions of handling input from iMessages or SMS, suggesting that Apple is exploring AI integration within the Messages app to provide functionalities like answering questions and completing sentences.

If a user receives an SMS with sender, content, and send_time fields, a voice assistant could take appropriate actions. These actions could include MessageReply, GetDirection, Call, SaveContact, Remind, MessageContact, or None, with corresponding action values and confidence scores in JSON format.

While Apple is not expected to rely on OpenAI models for its AI features in iOS 18, the company is actively testing its own AI models against ChatGPT. The SiriSummarization framework, for instance, utilizes on-device models developed by Apple, which are compared internally with the outputs of ChatGPT.

The code within iOS 17.4 suggests that Apple is conducting tests using four distinct AI models, including their internal Ajax model, AjaxGPT, ChatGPT, and FLAN-T5.

These findings indicate Apple’s dedication to integrating large language models into iOS and showcase their approach of developing their own systems while evaluating them against existing models like ChatGPT and FLAN-T5.

In a detailed report by Bloomberg in October, it was revealed that Apple is focused on incorporating features powered by large language models into iOS 18, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities within their software.
