My life is centered around my phone. It’s a hard truth to admit, but I find myself tethered to my smartphone for the majority of my waking hours. As the Mobile Editor at Tech Advisor, using my phone is a necessary part of my job. Realizing that a change was necessary, I challenged myself to survive a week without using a smartphone. Switching to a flip phone didn’t have the desired impact, so I opted for a ‘dumb phone’ – a basic feature phone with limited functionalities. Despite missing out on features like Chrome, WhatsApp, and Google Maps, I was oddly excited to make the switch, highlighting my need for a break from constant smartphone usage.
Throughout the week, I experienced moments of discomfort and reliance on other devices like my laptop. Blocking distracting websites and engaging in conversations with loved ones over the phone reminded me of the simplicity and effectiveness of basic communication.

As my smartphone-free week came to an end, I reflected on the impact of the experiment. It brought a sense of calm, focus, and reduced stress into my life. While I don’t plan to give up my smartphone entirely, I aim to find a balance that allows me to enjoy its benefits without falling into mindless usage. The experience has motivated me to be more mindful of my technology usage and prioritize being present in the moment.
