It has been announced by Samsung that the next Unpacked launch event will be held on 10 July, with one of the rumored products being the Galaxy Watch Ultra. However, if the leaks turn out to be true, I am not inclined to purchase one.
I must admit, I am surprised that it took Samsung this long to introduce a competitor to the Apple Watch Ultra, which made its debut in 2022. Nonetheless, it seems that the wait may not have been worth it.
At this point, I am basing my opinions on leaked information, with Unpacked still a couple of weeks away, but rumors often do turn out to be true.
In my view, the main issue lies with the design. While I have generally appreciated Samsung’s approach to wearable design with features like rotating bezels and customizable buttons, the Ultra model appears to be unattractive and uninspiring.
If the renders shared online by leaksters are to be believed, the device will feature an unusual combination of a square body with slightly curved sides and a circular screen in the center.
Despite its bulky and disjointed appearance, reports suggest that the screen size will not be larger than that of the Galaxy Watch 6 at 1.5 inches.
While I am certain that the premium smartwatch will be equipped with top-notch technology and features, I am not convinced that I could tolerate wearing it on my wrist daily.
But wait a minute…
However, as I was writing this article, a new render of the Galaxy Watch Ultra surfaced, courtesy of the renowned Evan Blass. This render showcases a more attractive and stylish dark grey (potentially titanium) variant with an orange accent, which adds a pleasing touch to the design.
Perhaps this color scheme could sway me, but I still believe that it appears too boxy, large, and heavy – even for an Ultra model.
Another issue, which comes as no surprise, is the expected price of the smartwatch, which is rumored to be around $700. While not as expensive as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 priced at $799/£799, it is still beyond my budget.
Whether the leaks turn out to be accurate or not, we will soon find out. I am eager to get hands-on experience with the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 7 series to assess their real-world performance.
