Hulu users are facing frustration due to a persistent bug affecting fullscreen viewing on iPhone. Hulu has been investigating this issue for over a month without a fix, but a temporary workaround is available.
The problem is straightforward: iPhone users report that tapping the “expand” button does not make the video fullscreen. Instead, they are stuck watching in a smaller window in portrait orientation.
Hulu’s workaround for the bug is to disable the rotation lock on your iPhone. This can be done by swiping down from Control Center and tapping on the rotation lock icon. However, this is not an ideal solution as most other video apps automatically go fullscreen when the expand button is tapped, regardless of the rotation lock status.
The team at PiunikaWeb has been documenting the increasing complaints from Hulu users over the past month. Hulu acknowledged the issue and mentioned they were working on a fix in late May. Recently, Hulu once again acknowledged the ongoing problem and provided the aforementioned workaround.
Sorry for any inconvenience! This behavior is currently being investigated, and we hope to resolve it soon. For now, you can disable your orientation lock and rotate your phone to watch fullscreen.
Despite affecting a significant number of iPhone Hulu users for over a month, there is no update on a fix. The problem does not seem to be universal and appears to be resolved for users on iOS 17.
