The foldable phone market has been evolving for years, with manufacturers continuously exploring new form factors. While some companies are focusing on improving existing models, others are working on innovative designs behind the scenes.
The recent releases of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, and Motorola Razr 50 Ultra have brought improvements but retained familiar designs. However, rumors suggest that Huawei is set to break the mold with a new ‘tri-fold’ smartphone.

Chinese site Securities Daily reports that Huawei has been developing a ‘tri-fold’ smartphone with a unique Z-configuration for five years. The device was mentioned by Huawei Executive Director Yu Chengdong in a recent interview and is rumored to be mass-produced by the end of 2024.
Recent patents granted to Huawei suggest that the device will feature a double hinge system, allowing the screen to fold in both directions. The ‘tri-fold’ smartphone will unfold to reveal three distinct screens and a 10-inch display, along with a rear-facing camera and lightweight glass construction to reduce weight and bulk.
Sources indicate that Chinese display maker BOE will supply the screens, and the device is expected to run on HarmonyOS, Huawei’s Android alternative. The smartphone may be powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9100 chipset and could be priced around ¥15,000 ($2,065).
