Introducing Instagram Map
Instagram has rolled out a new feature called Instagram Map, similar to Snap Map, allowing U.S. users to share their recent active location and explore location-based content.
Unlike Snap Map, Instagram Map updates your location only when you open the app or have it running in the background, rather than providing real-time updates.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, reassured users that location sharing on Instagram Map is opt-in by default, addressing safety concerns.
The feature automatically populates location tags from recently posted Stories or Reels, making it easier for users to access location information.
Accessing Instagram Map
To access Instagram Map, go to your DMs page and tap the “Map” option at the top. A pop-up message will inform you about the new feature and its privacy settings.
Setting Location-Sharing Preferences

Upon opening the Map, you can choose who can see your location – Friends, Close Friends, select users, or no one.
To adjust your preferences, go to your profile, tap on settings, select “Story, live and location,” and then tap “Location sharing” to modify your settings.
Even with location sharing turned off, you can still view others’ locations on the Map.
Using Instagram Map
Upon opening the app, you’ll see locations of friends who shared their location and location-based Stories and Reels from people you follow.
Instagram Map allows you to discover new places and events shared by your connections, even if you have disabled location sharing.
You can also leave short messages, or “Notes,” on the map for others to see, enhancing the social experience on Instagram.
