How to use Apple Maps on the web

Introduction

Apple Maps, a competitor to Google Maps, has recently launched its web version after years of being available only on Apple devices. This move makes Apple Maps accessible to a wider audience, including users on macOS and Windows.

Previously, Apple Maps was confined to Apple’s ecosystem, limiting its reach to users with Apple devices. With the web version now available, more users can experience Apple Maps without the need for a specific device.

The web version of Apple Maps is currently in beta and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on macOS, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows. Support for additional browsers and platforms is expected to expand in the future.

The beta version of Apple Maps on the web offers a range of features for users. To get started, simply open Safari or Chrome on macOS, or Chrome or Edge on Windows, and visit https://beta.maps.apple.com.

The map interface occupies most of the browser window, allowing you to zoom in and out using the buttons in the lower right corner or through mouse scroll wheel or trackpad gestures. You can adjust the map orientation by clicking and dragging on the compass icon at the top right, or quickly navigate to your current location by clicking on the navigation pointer (arrow).

You can choose from three map views by clicking on the map icon in the top left corner: Standard view, Satellite view, and Hybrid view (which combines satellite imagery with standard map labels).

The left-hand side panel includes a Search option for finding specific locations such as restaurants, cities, or countries. You can also explore nearby places like gas stations, parking spots, or bars. Clicking on a place label on the map provides detailed information including photos, reviews, opening times, and menus.

Guides and Directions

The left-hand panel also features Guides, offering curated travel guides on various topics and regions. By selecting a guide, such as the best jazz venues in New Orleans, the map will display relevant locations with additional information like photos and accessibility details.

Navigation is another key feature of Apple Maps on the web. Users can input their starting and ending points, choose between driving, walking, public transportation, or biking, and customize routes based on preferences like avoiding tolls or highways.

While navigation instructions may be more practical on mobile devices, users can still view and share directions on the web version. Additional features, such as signing in to access saved locations, are expected to be added in future updates.

Apple Maps on the web offers a promising start with its current features, providing users with a functional tool for exploring maps and finding points of interest.
