Stray Cats and Politicians: Unlikely Allies in Helping Each Other
While stray cats and politicians may not seem to have much in common, a retired engineer from Pocatello, Idaho, Kelly Broodry, found a way to bring them together for a good cause. During every election cycle, political signs flood the streets, only to be discarded once the elections are over. Broodry saw an opportunity to repurpose these signs into warm shelters for stray cats, providing them with a safe haven during the colder months.
The Inspiration Behind the Project
The idea to repurpose campaign signs into cat shelters came as a challenge from a friend to find a practical use for these discarded materials. Broodry, always up for a creative challenge, saw the potential in turning these corrugated plastic signs, which are not easily recyclable, into insulated shelters for stray cats. By providing them with a weather-resistant shelter, Broodry not only helps the cats stay warm but also addresses the issue of overpopulation and the spread of illness among feral cats.
Impact of Cat Shelters
While concerns exist about the impact of stray cats on native wildlife, offering them shelters can help prevent them from seeking refuge in less desirable places like sheds or porches. These shelters also provide a safe space for cats to escape the elements and reduce the feral cat population through humane interventions like spaying and neutering programs. By building these shelters, individuals can play a role in managing the feral cat population and promoting the well-being of these animals.
How to Build a Cat Shelter
To create a cat shelter following Broodry’s design, you will need 13 feet of 2×2 wood, 18×24-inch political signs made of fluted polypropylene, wood screws, silicone, and straw for bedding. Start by cutting the wood to form the frame, then cut the signs into sections and assemble them to create insulated walls, roof, and floor panels. Cut an entrance hole, seal the shelter with silicone, and fill it with straw for warmth. For detailed instructions and photos, download the complete guide shared by Broodry on the Bingham County Humane Society website.
How You Can Help
You can contribute to this initiative by collecting unused campaign signs after elections and donating them for building cat shelters. Spread the word on social media or neighborhood platforms like Nextdoor to gather signs from your community. Reach out to local animal shelters or rescue organizations to collaborate on similar projects or consider starting your own initiative to help stray cats in your area. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals and promote responsible pet ownership.
