It’s ironic that the very devices we use to clean other items, like dishwashers and washing machines, also need cleaning to work efficiently. The same goes for vacuum cleaners.
If your vacuum cleaner is losing suction or emitting a stale odor, it’s time for some maintenance. Here are the most common tasks to keep your vacuum cleaner in top shape. Refer to your manual for detailed instructions on accessing each part.
1. Clean the brush bar
A clogged brush bar can hinder the vacuum’s performance, leading to more effort on your part and potential damage to the belt and motor. To clean, unplug the vacuum, flip it over, and carefully cut away any hair or debris using scissors. Avoid pulling on the bristles. If needed, wash the brush bar with warm water and ensure it’s completely dry before reattaching.

If the brush bar remains stuck or spins slowly even after cleaning, consider replacing the belt or the brush bar itself to maintain the vacuum’s efficiency.
2. Washing and/or replacing filters
Clean filters are essential for effective dust pick-up. Locate the filter in your vacuum, and if washable, rinse it under warm water. Ensure the filter is completely dry before reinstalling. For non-washable filters, tap off excess dust before reattaching or replace if worn out.

For filters that can’t be washed, tap off excess dust and replace them if necessary, following the manufacturer’s recommendations on replacement intervals.
3. Check for clogs
If your vacuum is losing suction, there may be a blockage causing the issue. Unplug the vacuum, locate the clog, and clear it. Check the hose, brush bar, attachments, and main vacuum body for any obstructions that could be affecting performance.

4. Empty it often
Regularly emptying the vacuum is crucial for its performance. Change bags in bagged models frequently and ensure they are properly attached. For bagless models, empty the bin when two-thirds full to maintain suction power.
5. Wash the bin
To prevent stale odors, wash the bin of your vacuum cleaner regularly. For bagged models, wipe the cavity with soapy water and let it dry completely. For bagless models, detach the bin, wash it, and dry thoroughly. Consider using a vinegar solution to disinfect if odors persist.
