How Clean Energy Charging for iPhone works

Recently, iPhone introduced a new feature called Clean Energy Charging, aimed at reducing carbon footprint by charging during times of lower carbon-emission electricity availability. Apple provides more information on how this feature operates in a support document.

According to Apple:

When Clean Energy Charging is enabled and you connect your iPhone to a charger, your iPhone receives a forecast of the carbon emissions in your local energy grid and uses this information to charge your device during times of cleaner energy production.

Clean Energy Charging is currently available only in the United States and is activated by default when setting up your iPhone or after updating to iOS 16.1.

Clean Energy Charging is automatically enabled, but users can adjust the setting by accessing the Settings app, selecting Battery, and then Battery Health & Charging. Here, you will find a toggle specifically dedicated to the Clean Energy Charging feature.

Clean Energy Charging collaborates with Optimized Battery Charging to understand your charging patterns. It is activated in locations where you frequently charge your iPhone for extended periods, such as your home or workplace. However, the feature does not engage when charging habits are inconsistent or in new locations, like during travel.

To ensure Clean Energy Charging functions properly, Apple recommends configuring the following settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and confirm that Clean Energy Charging is enabled.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and ensure that Location Services is turned on.
  3. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and verify that System Customization is activated.
  4. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations and make sure Significant Locations is enabled.

If you wish to override Clean Energy Charging after enabling it, you can do so directly from your iPhone’s lock screen. When charging is paused, a notification will appear on the lock screen. Long press on the notification and select “Charge Now” to override the feature.
