In 2024, Google introduced four flagship phones for the first time ever.
The regular Pixel 9 was accompanied by the Pixel 9 Pro, the new Pixel 9 Pro XL, and a rebranded foldable in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, each offering distinct features to appeal to different users.
Priced at £799/$799, the standard Pixel 9 was the most budget-friendly option among the four models. Upgrading to the 9 Pro provided a dedicated 5x telephoto lens and an improved selfie camera while maintaining the compact 6.3-inch display.
For an additional £100/$100, the top-tier 9 Pro XL boasted a larger 6.8-inch screen, a bigger battery, and faster charging capabilities. The 9 Pro Fold stood out with its unique design and higher price point.
However, with the upcoming launch of the Pixel 10 series scheduled for Google’s event on August 20, the dynamics may shift. While the positions of the 10 Pro XL and 10 Pro Fold seem secure, the regular Pixel 10 threatens the status of the Pixel 10 Pro.
What sets the Pixel 10 apart is the expected inclusion of a telephoto lens, a feature previously exclusive to the Pixel 9 Pro. Reports suggest that the Pixel 10 may sport a 10.8Mp sensor for this purpose.
Android Headlines
Early previews of a Pixel 10 lineup poster by Android Authority reveal at least three rear lenses on all models.
Although the exact optical zoom capabilities are yet to be confirmed, any significant improvement over the rumored 48Mp, 5x sensor on the Pixel 10 Pro could diminish the latter’s appeal. Google may compensate for this by tweaking other aspects of the Pixel 10’s camera setup.
Most notably, the rumored 48Mp main and 13Mp ultrawide lenses on the Pixel 10 Pro mirror the impressive performance of the Pixel 9a’s cameras.
Considering that the price gap between the Pixel 10 and 10 Pro is expected to remain the same as the Pixel 9 series, the minor camera upgrades on the Pro model may not justify the increased cost for many consumers.

Android Headlines
Additional upgrades on the Pro variant may include faster wireless charging, Thread smart home standard support, and Ultrawideband (UWB) for precise location tracking and remote access features.
While certain enhancements are expected, core aspects like display, chipset, battery capacity, and software are likely to remain consistent across both models. Furthermore, the Pixel 10’s color options, as per renders from Android Headlines, may offer more variety compared to the Pixel 10 Pro.
Unless Google introduces unexpected surprises, opting for the Pixel 10 over the 10 Pro this year may be a more cost-effective choice. Your wallet will thank you.
