The latest Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote took a different approach compared to recent years, especially since Apple shifted to fully pre-recorded virtual events for WWDC 2020. The focus of this software-centric keynote was solely on the six main operating systems, with no hardware announcements or discussions about peripheral products like the HomePod, Apple TV, or AirPods.
In previous years, Apple dedicated a portion of its keynote to showcasing new features in its Home and Audio products, including updates for its popular AirPods. However, this year, AirPods were briefly mentioned during the iPadOS 26 segment, highlighting how new audio and video workflows would benefit from improved recording quality and camera controls.
Despite the limited mention, Apple hinted at two upcoming features for AirPods in iOS 26. While details are scarce, recent rumors and the current iOS 26 beta provide some insights into what users can expect.
High-Quality Audio Recording
Apple’s promise of “studio-quality vocal” recording with AirPods suggests enhancements in tonal balance and timbre to accurately capture the texture of the user’s voice. Although specific details on the technology behind this feature are not disclosed, it likely involves machine learning algorithms. The improved recording quality is speculated to rival that of professional lavalier microphones.
This feature, showcased in the iPadOS 26 presentation, will also be available on iPhone in iOS 26, but limited to AirPods or AirPods Pro with an H2 chip.
Camera Remote
Another anticipated feature is the ability to use AirPods as a camera remote for initiating and stopping video recording. This functionality, reminiscent of Apple’s wired EarPods, will require AirPods equipped with an H2 chip and offer customizable press-and-hold gestures.
The current implementation in the iOS 26 beta allows seamless video recording control when the Camera app is active, with a three-second countdown timer for capturing photos.
Pause Media When Falling Asleep
iOS 26 introduces an option to automatically pause audio playback on AirPods when the user falls asleep. While the exact mechanism remains unspecified, it is likely based on the AirPods’ internal sensors rather than requiring an Apple Watch for sleep detection.
Automatic Switching with CarPlay
Users can now toggle “AirPods Automatic Switching with CarPlay” in the iOS 26 settings, allowing audio continuity between AirPods and CarPlay. This feature ensures seamless audio transitions but currently lacks bidirectional functionality.
Simplified Beta Updates
Apple has streamlined the process of installing beta firmware updates for AirPods in iOS 26, eliminating the need for complex developer mode activation. The new “AirPods Beta Updates” section in settings simplifies access to pre-release features and analytics data.
While additional rumored features like head gestures and a Universal Translator remain unconfirmed, Apple’s continuous innovation with AirPods suggests exciting prospects for future updates.
