Do you have any ideas for names for two bald eagle chicks? Maybe Talon or Sam Eagle? The choice is yours, and it could become a reality.
Jackie and Shadow, the well-known bald eagle pair on the internet, are seeking help in naming their two surviving eaglets. You can submit your entries through the Friends of Big Bear Valley website until Friday, March 28 at 11:59 pm PST. The Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest Cam, which streams 24/7 without advertisements, is made possible by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization that relies on donations, including those from the naming contest.
The entry fees are $5 for one name entry, $10 for three name entries, or $25 for 10 name entries.
When submitting names, please keep them gender-neutral as the sex of the chicks has not been determined yet. Also, ensure that the names are G-rated to avoid automatic disqualification. A computer will randomly select a final list of names, which will be sent to students at Big Bear elementary schools for voting. Typically, local third graders have the honor of choosing the final names, but this year, third, fourth, and fifth graders will be involved due to previous unsuccessful hatchings.
The voting by the students will take place on April 1, with the winners announced later that day on FOBBV’s official Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube pages. If your submitted name is chosen, you will receive a certificate of recognition.
The journey has been a rollercoaster for the thousands of viewers of the live cam this year. Chick 1 hatched on March 3, followed by Chick 2 on March 4, and Chick 3 on March 8. Unfortunately, only two chicks were visible after a snowstorm on March 13, and one chick was confirmed to have passed away the next day.
Although the specific chick’s identity was not confirmed, the surviving eaglets are temporarily known as Bigger Chick (BC) and Smaller Chick (SC). The chick that passed away has been named Misty in remembrance of Kathi Misterly, an FOBBV volunteer who lost her battle with cancer.

The name of Jackie and Shadow’s 2022 chick was Spirit. So, get creative with your name suggestions and submit them for a chance to make your mark.
