Gurman: iOS 18 AI features to be powered by 'entirely on-device' LLM, offering privacy and speed benefits

Apple is heavily investing in various artificial intelligence technologies, with the announcement of its AI strategy expected in June at WWDC. The new iPhone AI features are anticipated to be powered by an offline, on-device, large language model developed by Apple, emphasizing privacy and speed benefits.

Code references in iOS 17.4 pointed to an on-device model called “Ajax,” with Apple also working on server-hosted versions of Ajax. While on-device LLMs may not be as powerful as server-based models, Apple’s integration with its platforms and chips allows for optimized performance and offline functionality.

On-device LLMs have the advantage of quick response times and privacy, as data remains local. They can excel at tasks like generating auto-replies and improving Siri requests. Apple’s strict privacy measures align well with on-device AI models.

Apple’s AI strategy at WWDC will reveal more about its approach, with potential partnerships for specific tasks. The keynote on June 10 will showcase new software features for various Apple devices.
