With RCS now available on the iPhone, Google is looking towards new features, including cross-platform end-to-end encryption (E2EE) between Android and iPhone. The governing GSMA body has stated that the next major milestone is to add important user protections such as interoperable end-to-end encryption to the RCS Universal Profile.
Google has announced that they are collaborating with the ecosystem to introduce cross-platform E2EE to RCS chats soon. Currently, the Google Messages app on Android offers its own E2E encryption for RCS 1:1 and group conversations, but this does not extend to iPhone chats.
Last year, Google revealed plans to support the MLS protocol for interoperable E2E encrypted messaging. Apple also expressed interest in working with GSMA members to incorporate encryption into the standard.
Additionally, Google mentioned that they are excited about Apple potentially adding features like the ability to react to media, reply directly to messages in group chats, and more. The RCS Universal Profile 2.7, finalized in June, introduced two new features: enabling Replies and Reactions to sent and received messages, and allowing message senders to Edit, Recall, and Delete messages they sent earlier.
