During Google’s recent I/O conference, more details were revealed about what smartwatch users can expect from the upcoming version of Wear OS when it arrives later this year.
So, what can we expect from Wear OS 5, and how will it impact the way we use our smart wearables? Here’s everything we know about Wear OS 5 so far.
When will Wear OS 5 be released?
Since Google rebranded Android Wear to Wear OS in 2018, the release schedule has been somewhat staggered. While there have been several point releases introducing new features, the main versions have debuted as follows:
- Wear OS 1 – March 2018
- Wear OS 2 – September 2018
- Wear OS 3 – August 2021
- Wear OS 4 – July 2023
Although there isn’t a clear pattern, recent versions have been released in the summer or towards the end of the season. Google has only mentioned that Wear OS 5 will be launched “later this year,” but speculation suggests it may arrive around September 2024. The release timing may also be influenced by upcoming hardware launches, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 in August 2024 and the Pixel Watch 3 in October 2024.
Given Samsung’s previous partnership, Wear OS 5 could potentially debut sooner, possibly at Samsung’s next Unpacked event expected to take place on July 10.

Which devices will be compatible with Wear OS 5?
Google has not yet released a list of devices that will be supported by Wear OS 5, so it is currently speculation as to which watches will receive the update. Likely candidates include the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 models, as well as recent models from Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Mobvoi, and others.
This information will be updated as more concrete details become available.
What new features will there be in Wear OS 5?
Google announced some of the main updates that Wear OS 5 will bring at I/O. These updates seem to focus on refinement and performance improvements rather than a complete overhaul with new features. Here are the key highlights:
Battery life improvements
Google confirmed in their blog, The Keyword, that improved battery life will be a priority in Wear OS 5. They suggest that this will be achieved through increased performance efficiency, with watches running an outdoor marathon consuming up to 20% less power compared to Wear OS 4 watches.
For smartwatches struggling to last a day, this is promising news.
More advanced fitness tracking features
In the same blog post, Google mentioned that Wear OS 5 will support advanced tracking metrics such as ground contact time, stride length, and vertical oscillation. This is great news for runners who want to focus on their technique and motion style. While these features may not be relevant for all fitness activities, Google may announce improvements for other sports and workout monitoring.
Google adds some flavor to watch faces
Another enhancement in Wear OS 5 is an updated approach to designing and laying out watch faces. The Watch Face Format will now offer more advanced complications, allowing for a more interactive and useful display. New features include Goal progress and Weighted elements, providing detailed progress tracking and information breakdowns.
Developers will also have access to preset layouts called ‘flavors’ when creating watch faces.
Live weather data
Wear OS 5 will include live weather data, allowing users to stay informed about upcoming weather conditions. Whether it’s rain on the horizon or a heatwave approaching, this feature will be handy for planning your day.
These are the features we know about so far, but Google may unveil more in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, check out our guide to the best smartwatches to help you choose the right wearable for this year.
