Introducing Data Science Agent: Google’s Latest Tool in Google Colab

Google Colab, Google’s cloud-based notebook tool for coding, data science, and AI, is now equipped with a new feature called Data Science Agent. This AI tool aims to assist Colab users in efficiently cleaning data, visualizing trends, and gaining insights from their uploaded datasets.

Initially unveiled at Google’s I/O developer conference, Data Science Agent was introduced as a standalone project. However, it has now been seamlessly integrated into Colab to provide users with direct access to the agent from their Colab notebooks, as mentioned by Kathy Korevec, director of product at Google Labs, in a recent interview.

Available for free on Colab starting this week, Data Science Agent caters primarily to data scientists and AI enthusiasts. The tool can also be utilized to identify API anomalies, analyze customer data, and even generate SQL code. Users simply need to upload their data and pose a question to the agent.

Powered by Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model family and advanced reasoning tools, Data Science Agent aids in feature engineering and data cleaning tasks. Korevec mentioned that Google continues to enhance the agent using techniques like reinforcement learning and user feedback to optimize its performance.

Presently, Data Science Agent supports CSV, JSON, or .txt files under 1GB in size, capable of analyzing around 120,000 tokens in a single prompt. Looking ahead, Korevec hinted at the possibility of integrating Data Science Agent into other developer-focused Google applications and services.

“We’re just scratching the surface of its capabilities,” she stated. “Being an agent, we have the flexibility to integrate it into various tools without imposing the need for users to dive into Colab’s codebase.”
