Google might fix its fingerprint scanner woes with the Pixel 9

Google’s highly anticipated Pixel 9 series is rumored to come equipped with an upgraded ultrasonic fingerprint scanner that promises faster and more reliable performance. According to a report by Android Authority, this new technology will replace the optical under-display fingerprint sensor featured in the Pixel 6, offering improved functionality even with wet or oily fingerprints.

This transition is expected to address common issues faced by users when unlocking their Pixel devices. Some users have reported issues with the previous optical reader, citing factors such as light levels and finger dryness affecting its reliability. Optical scanners, the traditional method for fingerprint recognition, rely on flashing light against the user’s finger to visually detect patterns and ridges on the surface. However, this method is susceptible to interference from external factors like dirt or blemishes.

In contrast, ultrasonic sensors offer more precise fingerprint reading by bouncing ultrasonic pulses off the finger. This not only enhances accuracy but also eliminates the need for bright light, making it convenient for users to unlock their phones even in low light conditions. The Pixel 9 is rumored to feature Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) ultrasonic sensor, the same model found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, as revealed by reliable leaker Kamila Wojciechowska.
