Google Maps for iPhone gets sheet & directions redesign

Google Maps has introduced a sheet-based redesign for its iPhone app, following a similar update on Android back in July.

One noticeable change is the rounded corners on all bottom sheets within the app, providing a more modern look. When tapping on a place listing and sliding up, the map remains visible at the top behind the status bar, ensuring seamless navigation.

Another significant usability improvement is the removal of the back button on the left side of the search bar to close listings. Instead, a new ‘x’ button is now located in the right corner of the sheet next to the share option. This change enhances reachability and one-handed usage, aligning Google Maps with Apple Maps’ behavior.

Additionally, the directions UI has been redesigned with the transportation mode switcher now conveniently placed at the bottom of the screen after entering a destination. This change was widely implemented on Android in July and is now available on Google Maps for iPhone with version 25.10.2.
