Google Maps for iPhone can scan your screenshots to save places

After an announcement in March, Google Maps has introduced a new feature that can scan screenshots on your iPhone and save any locations found.

With this new Gemini-powered capability, Google aims to simplify the process of saving places found on the web or social media through screenshots. Instead of manually trying to remember and search for the location in Maps, the app will automatically detect and save those places to a list.

Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps installed and go to the “You” tab. You will see a new private list called “Screenshots” with a tutorial demo.

When you capture a screenshot containing location information such as names and addresses, Google will automatically recognize them and display the Maps listing. A “Review” interface will show identified places for you to “Save” or “Don’t Save,” adding them to the Screenshots list for easy organization into other collections.

By enabling “Allow Access to All Photos,” the auto-scan feature will automatically detect new screenshots with locations and present them in a carousel for your review. Alternatively, you can manually import images for review from your gallery. There is a prominent “Turn on/off auto-scan” button below the screenshots carousel.

This feature is currently available on Google Maps for iOS (US English) and will be coming to Android in the future.
